Monastiraki is lots of fun and is a bit like the "mermergia". Great place to people watch and look at other people buy the stuff that's made in China. Hey, they are smiling as they buy and the store owner is smiling right back.
I know exactly what you mean about the sense of historical continuity in the Monastiraki area and how much Athens in general has evolved! We lived in Athens from 1975-1990 and experienced massive changes in the city during that time.
Athens is a bit different from when I first started going to Greece 23 years ago. A great city to just walk and get a feel for the neighborhoods. The sights and sounds and especially the smells makes you realize that humans have been there and living like that probably before the country you are from was even dreamed of.
