Every May the African embassies in Athens give out an open invitation to a festival celebrating African culture, cuisine and handicrafts. It's a two day party that draws big crowds to the South African ambassador's residence.

The Greek National Opera takes part in the "Artistic Actions in Athens" series of cultural events that runs from September 1 to October 2, 2011. This glimpse at the GNO's tour of the city by bus is just a small part of a joint programme run by the Ministry of Culture and Athens Municipality which includes participation from the National Theatre, the National Gallery, the National Museum for Contemporary Art and the Athens State Orchestra.

"Old Seeds for New Cultures" is the theme behind this collaborative exhibition curated and designed by two Greek architects. Showing at the New Benaki Museum till May 22, 2011.

"Cathara Deftera" (or Clean Monday) marks the start of the Eastern Orthodox Lent. Many Athenians celebrate the day by flying their kites from the top of Philoppapou Hill and the Pnyx.

Once a year, on the evening of the August full moon, Athens archaeological sites are opened up to the public.
